Laura Lee

Children and music have always been an integral part of my life. I have always found myself as part of a musical community; learning piano just like my sister, learning flute just like my cousin, and singing in children's choir with my sister and two cousins. Little did I know that I would soon be completing my certificate of merit advanced level in piano, traveling around the world to Europe and Asia playing flute with my symphony, and singing in many different vocal ensembles including University Gospel Choir, University Chorus, and Oakland Jazz Choir.

I am an Associate Simply Music Piano Teacher, Licensed Kindermusik Educator, and active member of the Music Teachers' Association of California with a double BA of Music and Molecular Cell Biology from the University of California, Berkeley. With 12 years of formal piano training with various teachers including JoAnn Stenberg of Burlingame and current study of the Taubman approach with Elizabeth Swarthout of the Golandsky Institute, attendance at the Golandsky Institute July 2007 Summer Symposium at Princeton, 11 years of formal flute training with various teachers including Yaada Weber at the SF Conservatory Preparatory Division and Janet Maestre at UC Berkeley, 5 years of formal voice training including study with Deborah Benedict and David Gordon of UC Berkeley and Kathy Kennedy of SLS, and 1 year of acoustic guitar with Caren Armstrong, I continue to enrich my own learning. By continuing to learn, I improve my skills as an educator. I have taught various classes including Siebel Preschool Music in Emeryville, Pacific Academy Preschool Music, 1st grade music at Ohlone Elementary School, served as musical director for a middle/high school musical drama at Hercules Middle/High School, served as musical director for my UC Madrigals group, taught 6th grade science at HMHS, and taught a UC Berkeley Sight-Singing course using the Kodaly Method.

Outside of the studio, I am joyfully married to Alex, a passionate SJFD firefighter/paramedic by profession and professional salsa dancer by hobby. We enjoy spending time outdoors with our two big friendly dogs, Banzai and Zeus. You may find us on the Delta fishing or swimming, hiking a mountain, camping in Tahoe, rallying on the tennis courts, carving the snow on our snowboards, singing and playing on the piano, or inside our kitchen cooking up a feast.

My passion for music has permeated throughout my life, and I am extremely excited to combine my two most favorite interests into a job I love: working with children & their families, and sharing my love of music with them. It is a joy for me to see families smile, sing, and make music together. I know the love for music is a gift they can keep and develop throughout their lives. I look forward to sharing music with you.

Warmly,

Laura Lee
